Beau In The Woods founder and designer Kylie Dadson recently travelled to India and has brought her exotic adventures to life with her most recent collection that is now available in store. We sat down with Kylie to talk about her story…
Tell us a little bit about the Beau In The Woods story and how this local label got to where it is today?
We originally created Beau In The Woods because we wanted to offer our customers something different to what we were buying in our previous boutique, Chasing Bow. Having a signature print with a story to tell behind each piece was super important, so we started by using images taken by my photographer stepfather. Each collection has since grown to include images from our travels and collaborations with local artists. We do not aim to be trend based or follow traditional seasons, and as we are locally manufactured it gives us the freedom to tailor collections to the now instead of 12 months into the future.
As the designer and buyer for Beau In The Woods, you must have a great understanding of your wonderful customers. What do you think best represents the Beau-ettes?
Our girls definitely like colour, and print on print! We have experimented with structure but find it is the free-flowing, relaxed styling that our customers adore. It is quite common for our ‘beau-ettes’ to collect 3-4 pieces of the same print or style, so for us it is important to create pieces that are timeless trans-seasonally and we always ensure the quality of our fabrics and production are long lasting for wear over years to come.
We love that Beau In The Woods uses photography in its collections. How has your life been inspired by photography?
My stepfather is a photographer and my mother has this fabulous ability to take photos at the most inappropriate of moments so I suppose in between the two, I found my snap happy niche. When I was at university, I worked part time in a photography lab and learnt so much about the development process and loved over-saturating the colours.
You recently travelled to India. Tell us about some of your wonderful experiences in this beautiful country?
India is incredible. It is everything and more that you can imagine. The history absolutely blew our minds, and wandering the complex of the Taj Mahal is something everyone should try and experience at dawn. The 14th and 16th century palaces in Rajasthan were beautiful, but the fort in Jodhpur just took it to another level. In Jodhpur, my favourite part of the day was waking up at 5am to the call of prayer from the mosque next door. It was such enchanting sound that just transported you so far from home. Walking the streets with elephants in Udaipur and of course, cows on the beach, was a definite highlight. In South Goa, we ate seafood for every meal and the sunsets were the hottest pink you could imagine. I learnt so much from just talking to people and hearing their views on life.
Will we see some photographs from this trip utilised in the upcoming collection? What should customers start to get excited for?
The first drop is our Maharaja print which has just landed in store! It was created from photos we took of the peacock gate in the City Palace in Jaipur which dates back to the 1700’s. To honour the history involved, we have produced the print in our classic Beau favourites – our resort shorts & wide leg pants, back with flippy shift dresses and matching silk blazers. The next drop will be our palace prints and these pieces will have a total Palm Springs 70s vibe – they will be spliced with sheer silks to represent the modesty of the Indian culture, whilst coveting our always-wanna-be-poolside-with-a-cocktail design aesthetic.
