Art meets architecture

FAKE by Michael Cook exhibiting at The Calile

Art meets architecture as design led hotel, The Calile collaborates once again with Jan Murphy Gallery. The 2023 partnership welcomes an engaging exhibition by Michael Cook – a renowned Queensland-born artist of Bidjara heritage.

The photographic series entitled FAKE takes inspiration from Cook’s personal story and the legacy of colonisation. The artworks depict the journey of an Indigenous couple and their adopted child on a road-trip through the Australian outback – a roles reversed ode to Cook’s upbringing in an non-Indigenous family who travelled the country with their pet peacock.

The artworks feature a peacock (named Andrew), model parents, and luxury clothing and accessories (both real and counterfeit) holidaying in iconic Australian locations with the use of ‘fake’ items signifying parallels to the misuse of Indigenous motifs. Find out more here and catch this insightfully engaging exhibition on level one at The Calile Hotel until Wednesday 12 April.
