Under the sea, under the sea...

Gail Sorronda makes waves at MBFWA

Gail Sorronda has taken Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia by storm yet again, with her S/S15 collection, “Mermaid Exist:  As Above / So Below”.

It’s no secret that the dream to be a mermaid is one embedded in every little girls mind from the first time they watch Disney’s, “The Little Mermaid”.  From there on in, every beach trip revolves around being built in to a mermaid tail made of sand, and holding your breath for as long as your lungs allow, resurfacing above the salty water left with a slick magical mermaid-do.  This unfulfilled dream is the reason that our local girl, Gail Sorronda, has left tongue’s wagging at fashion week.

Quoting Ariel as her muse, Sorronda has landed herself an exclusive collaboration with Disney and The Little Mermaid – coincidentally, a film that is to be revived by renowned director Sophia Coppola in 2015.  With the aim to take her audience on a character journey into the lives of mythical marine life, the local designer teamed up with none other than the Queensland Ballet, creating a duality and natural order in her show that strayed from the classic linear shows traditionally exhibited at MBFWA.

Models were sent down the runway with masses of mermaid hair, slicked back from their dewy faces, creating a fantastical beauty look that is sure to be on the Pinterest boards of otherworldly girls across the globe.  Of course, no Gail Sorronda collection would be complete without the compliments of Arielle de Pinto accessories.  The signature flat form shoe was showcased with every look – a refreshing change from they sky-high stilettos that usually dominate fashion week.  A designer who manages to merge comfort with classiness?  To that we say, yes please!

Take a peek at some pieces from the show below, or watch the full show here.  The collection is due to drop in-store September.  Watch this space!
