Winter Wisdoms...

2 Minutes With Sarah Birchley

We sat down with Sarah Birchley, a Brisbane based stylist who is making waves across the nation to pick her brain on her winter survival tips.

What is your number one style essential for winter?

A great pair of ankle boots – my favourite are the iconic Chloë Susannah boots.

Where would we find you hiding out on a winter’s day in James St?

Afternoon window shopping followed by a wine and charcuterie at Gerard’s Bar.

What are your three style tips for surviving Brisbane’s winter?

1. Invest in a great pair of boots or a bag that you can wear every day to update your wardrobe for the new season
2. We can still enjoy heavier textiles such as fur, shearling and wool in Queensland – just remember to purchase in silhouettes that make sense for our climate e.g. a shorter length jacket or vest
3. Inexpensive layering pieces such as a scarf or stockings can be a good way to revisit pieces in your wardrobe from Autumn, particularly for warmer winter days.

What is the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

My Strateas Carlucci black leather jacket; I wear this whenever I travel and receive compliments every time.

Where do you go when you need creative inspiration?

I love to get out of the city and spend time at the beach with my partner and our two dogs.  On occasions like this when I make time to relax, I immerse myself in a new book or record for inspiration.  I read a lot of fashion and music biographies and am currently in the middle of Kim Gordon’s ‘Girl In A Band’.

What do you think is the number one Brisbane winter fashion faux pas?

Ugg boots – keep them at home please!

What trends are you embracing this season, and what trends will you be avoiding?

I love the 1970’s influence which was seen on the runway at Lanvin, Chloe and Gucci to name a few, and will definitely be channelling these silhouettes throughout winter.  I am not inclined to wear layered accessories so will be opting for a great handbag and shoes with an outfit instead of lots of jewellery.

What item of clothing would turn an average Brisbane dude into a gentleman?

A well tailored suit is a must for any gentleman’s wardrobe.

If you could only give one tip for winter dressing, what would it be?

Have fun with the different layers and silhouettes that dressing for winter allows!

Who are some of your favourite upcoming Australian models?

Madison Stubbington, Marthe Wiggers and Queensland girls Kia Low, Grace Simmons and Talisa Quirk.

Where would we find you shopping on James St?

I love to shop at Maryon’s Shoes, Camargue, Optiko and Molten Store.

What elements of Brisbane culture are you passionate about?

The growing community of creatives based in Queensland who are producing work on a world-class level.

What songs would we find you grooving out to at the moment?

American folk rock band, Midlake, create music that has always reminded me of winter and I’m currently enjoying their new album ‘Antiphon’.
